Magruder beats DeMatha HS Basketball in Season Opener

20121205_JVN_6670 20121205_JVN_6673The defending 4A State Champions, The Magruder Colonels, hosted The DeMatha Stags who came off of a decent season last year. Early off in the game the Colonels and Stags were neck and neck. Midway through the first quarter senior point guard #10 JJ Epps sparked the Colonels with consecutive buckets giving his team a slight lead over the Stags and entering the second quarter with momentum. Throughout the second the momentum for the Colonels was a boost at their team starting capitalizing on mistakes by DeMatha. Senior Guard #5 Nick Griffin heated up from the perimeter hitting a few 3 pointers and shots from the arch, helping his team maintain the lead. Guard #10 JJ Epps continued to be a problem for the Stags with his explosive play, he seemed to be too good of a shooter to play off of and too fast to play up tight on.

Throughout the second half junior guard of the Stags #4 Corey Henson continues to keep his team in the game with big-time jumpers from the arch. Also freshmen guard #1 Alani Moore and sophomore guard #2 Terrell Davis continued to keep their team in the game with steady play throughout the third quarter. Entering the 4th quarter the second half had pretty much been one-sided going the Colonels way but the Stags continued to make a push with clutch jumpers by the 6’6 freshmen Guard #25 Joe Hampton and senior guard #3 Linwood Tiffin, as the game got down to the last few minutes the Stags couldn’t stop the Colonels from getting to the free throw line and were out rebounded. Final score 69-65 Colonels

Final Score Magruder HS 69 DeMatha HS 65
