Coming off a 2011 season plagued by close loses that left Watkins Mill wondering what could have been, the Wolverines wasted no time at Poolesville Friday night, taking their first three drives of the 2012 season in for touchdowns as they rolled to a 42-14 win.
The first scoring strike came on the game’s second play from scrimmage. Senior QB Patrick Schlosser threw a short screen pass out wide to WR Dontay Hears, who followed a block and exploded downfield for a 50-yard score. The Wolverines struck again with 4:38 left in the first quarter, this time when senior RB Prodige Kikwata—a Good Counsel transfer—rumbled over the goal line from 18 yards out. After a Poolesville punt, senior RB Quinton Littlejohn put Watkins Mill up 21-0 on a 40-yard scamper down the left sideline with 1:37 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines took a 35-0 lead into the locker room thanks to an electrifying 80-yard punt return by senior J.R. Gibson followed by a Schlosser-to-Littlejohn score from 6 yards out just before halftime.
Poolesville gave its home crowd something to cheer for when they broke the shutout shortly after halftime, then tacked on a short touchdown throw with 9 seconds left in the game.
Watkins Mill will be gunning for an upset next week when they host division powerhouse Damascus, a rematch of the teams’ bruising 7-0 Hornets win last year. Poolesville’s Week 2 matchup has the Falcons heading down to Richard Montgomery, which took a close Week 1 loss to Gaithersburg.
